The president of the Progressive Union for Renewal (UPR), Professor Joseph Djogbénou spoke about the political movements that have been observed so far and indicated the position of his political formation in the preparation of the presidential election of 2026. C It was thanks to an interview carried out by the newspaper Fraternité, that he reacted to this subject.

What you should know : “I observe many movements and many agitations which focus on a year while forgetting those which precede it”. It is in these terms that the former President of the Constitutional Court and President of the Progressive Union for Renewal (UPR), Professor Joseph Djogbénou reacts on the preparation of the 2026 elections. According to his explanations, within the UP renewal, no directives have been decided. “The Progressive Union for Renewal, through its authorities, will decide the appropriate moment of its choices and continue to be the soldiers of the protection of our democracy”, he indicated.
Between the lines : For the moment, the party, he makes it clear, is “at the side of the President of the Republic to contribute to the realization of the Government’s Program of Action. Better, adds Professor Djogbénou, the “Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA) and the institutions of our State have not launched an electoral process. Let us beware of selling the skin of the bear before having killed it”. His party, he argued, does not want to shy away from the essentials and the urgency of responding to social demand because they are fighting for the present and the future. “Today, we have to worry about the start of the school year; coming soon. We need to be more concerned about the health of our people. We must worry about transport, the quality of our roads, the demand of a large part of our populations for access to modern infrastructure. We must be concerned about strengthening our democracy,” said the president of UP le Renouveau.
Moreover : He recalls that on July 1, 2023, Nigeriens did not “expect a break in their democratic experience”. According to him, democracy is a daily conquest and “we must be soldiers of the protection of our democratic system”. Because, “who does not first look closer and fix further, loses orientation and priority, even responsibility”. The professor thinks that it is necessary that “we devote ourselves to these needs of our population, that we seek solutions likely to satisfy the daily concerns of our fellow citizens in the long term”. He believes that Benin has “more challenges to overcome than the others”.
