The new Animal Welfare Law, which comes into force on September 29, affects both those who already have pets and those who plan to incorporate one. Within the regulations, there is contracting civil liability insurance (if you do not already have it) that guarantees the well-being of our pet against possible diseases, accidents, or even damage that may cause third parties. An insurance that will be mandatory, and whose non-compliance can lead to fines of between 500 and 10,000 euros.

The question arises when we ask ourselves which pets are included in this mandatory insurance. All? Just a few? And in that case, which ones? We analyze what the law says.

Dogs

In Spain there are about 29 million pets, of which just over half (15 million) are dogs and cats.

In the case of dogs, article 30.3 of the law establishes for the first time the obligation to have this insurance for all dogs, regardless of their size, breed or age. It must be remembered that before the law, this insurance was only mandatory for potentially dangerous breeds (Akita Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bullmastiff, Doberman, Dogo Argentino, Dogo de Bordeaux, Brazilian Fila, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pit Bull, Presa Canario, Rottweiler and Tosa Inu). Madrid and the Basque Country already had similar regulations before this law.

Cats and other pets

Unlike dogs, cat and ferret owners will not be required to take out liability insurance, despite counting both as “companion animals”. The same thing happens with the rest of the pets; be canaries, turtles, hamsters, fish, etc. Nor will it be mandatory to take out insurance.

Prices

How much does one of these insurances cost? As for prices, its annual cost ranges from 20 euros for the cheapest, up to 300 euros for the most complete. Depending on the one we choose, it will include everything from veterinary expenses, death by accident, theft, search for loss, to the sacrifice and cremation of the animal.
