The chairman of the teachers’ organization Ran Erez sent a letter today (Wednesday) to the Minister of Education Yoav Kish, in which he criticizes his intention to apply to the labor court and request a restraining order regarding grades for pre-schoolers and twelfth graders in the Arab society (in order to be admitted to academic institutions). “You informed me that you intend to return to the confrontation outline and take legal action against the teachers’ organization, and try to leave the secondary education teachers exposed to the ‘good will’ of the finance officials.”

Erez announced yesterday the renewal of the organization’s sanctions, which include not going on trips and trips to Poland, not giving grades and not participating in grades. School days will be held as usual. The sanctions were renewed following two controversies: one, the treasury’s withdrawal from the payment of the first payment of NIS 800 in the September salary and its intention to pay in three months. The second is the treasury’s requirement that the organization’s teachers be included in the vacation schedule established with the teachers’ union.

“While the Ministries of Education and Finance did nothing, did not make a single commitment, here they are even asking to return to the typical foot-dragging and take 3 months before signing a binding collective agreement,” Erez wrote. “We asked to shorten the time frame, and in any case, to ensure the payment of the agreed salary increases on time – to pay the teachers who have been waiting over a year and a half for the salary increase.”

Erez added that he trusts the Labor Court to do its job. “I regret your choice to return to the scene of the conflict, but I trust the National Labor Court, which even criticized the conduct of the Ministry of Finance vis-à-vis the teachers’ organization for a year and a half.” He called on Kish to concentrate his efforts on signing a collective agreement with the teachers’ organization, “for the sake of the stability of the education system and for the women and teachers in Israel.”

Minister of Education Yoav Kish: “The minister asked to hold a meeting today with Ran Erez regarding the grades for the students, and the 12th graders in the Arab society (in order to be admitted to the academic institutions). Due to the urgency and the immediate harm to the students, the Ministry of Education will submit a restraining order to the Labor Court.”
