Local School Districts Prepare for Flu and COVID-19 Cases

COLUMBIA − As the new school year begins, local school districts in Columbia are implementing strategies to combat potential increases in flu and COVID-19 cases. Both the Jefferson City School District (JCSD) and the Hallsville School District are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and health of their students and staff.

The JCSD has a team of nurses who closely monitor for any potential COVID clusters, following state requirements for all communicable diseases within the schools. “Students and staff must be fever-free for at least 24 hours before returning to the classroom,” said Ryan Burns, the director of communications for JCSD. Any individuals returning to school before the 24-hour fever-free period will be sent home to prevent the spread of illness.

Similarly, the Hallsville School District emphasizes the importance of basic preventive measures. Kari Yeagy, the director of communications, stated, “We are sticking with the basics, making sure our kids wash their hands and learn how to cover their sneezes and coughs.” The district also plans to organize flu clinics for students and the community, with dates to be finalized soon.

For those not within these school districts, MU Health Care has announced upcoming vaccination clinics at the South Providence Medical Park. The clinics will offer flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines on September 30, October 14, and October 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. No appointment is necessary, but attendees are advised to bring their insurance information.

Additionally, MU will hold on-campus flu shot clinics starting on September 20. These clinics are available for faculty, staff, and dependents enrolled in a university medical insurance plan. Appointments must be made through the scheduling portal.

With these proactive measures and access to vaccination clinics, the local school districts and MU Health Care aim to minimize the impact of flu and COVID-19 cases on the students and community. By prioritizing preventive measures and offering vaccination opportunities, they strive to create a safe and healthy learning environment for all.
