The Paris-Bercy bus station will be closed “after the 2024 Olympic Games”announced, Thursday, September 7, the first deputy mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire, arguing for the “massification” bus traffic, “incivility” and poor management of operators.

This closure will take place at the end of “the deadline for public service delegation which binds us to the operator”, explained the elected official in charge of town planning and Greater Paris. The town hall then plans to “renew the management and the future manager will be prohibited from putting long-distance tourist coaches there”underlined Mr. Grégoire to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Flixbus and Blablacar are the two main operators of buses that pass through Bercy station, according to the town hall. “Diverted towards long-distance coach activities”the current station, located in the 12th arrondissement, was built in 1996 “to be a tourist coach parking lot to relieve the Parisian center and it will return to this vocation”affirmed Emmanuel Grégoire. “We need to develop high-capacity parking lots for tourist buses at the gates of Paris”he recalled.

“A dump”

The elected official of the 12th arrondissement deplores the “incivility linked to the overcrowding of the place”which became, according to him, “a dump” due in particular to “the incapacity of the bus operators and the manager” of the site to manage flows. Between now and during the Olympic Games, “emergency measures” will continue to be taken for the maintenance of the station by the municipality.

If currently “no local authority or authority has a planning role”, “a public authority must be responsible” of the organization of long-distance coach transport, according to Mr. Grégoire.

to finish “we want to think about a distribution” stations, in particular with Ile-de-France Mobilités and the metropolis, assured Mr. Grégoire, who says he is in favor of “small bus stations on large transport hubs” of the region, more accessible according to him to the whole of the Ile-de-France population. For the chosen one, “the Bercy district cannot bear the consequences of the shortcomings of public authorities alone”.
