The development of cancer cells is influenced by various risk factors. Cancer research is continually discovering new factors.

Cancer is a disease in which the body’s own cells multiply uncontrollably. They eventually form a tumor (malignant tumor), which destroys healthy tissue. This, in turn, means that body functions can no longer run as usual and optimally. There are various factors that influence the transformation of normal cells into cancer cells. New risk factors are continually being discovered in cancer research.

One reason for the development of cancer can be damage to the genetic material. These arise, for example, during natural cell division or accidentally due to an error in normal cell metabolism. Your own lifestyle can be harmful to your genes if it includes an unhealthy diet, excessive weight, smoking, frequent alcohol consumption, and little exercise. These factors increase the likelihood of developing cancer.

However, only five percent of diagnosed cases can be traced back to hereditary factors. Although some genes can influence certain types of cancer to be more likely to develop, the main causes usually lie in other factors and carcinogens. A list from the US Department of Health and Human Services includes around 250 different risk factors such as viruses, chemicals, some foods or certain ingredients, radioactive radiation, X-rays, and alcoholic beverages. In December 2021, the list was expanded to include the following factors:

1. Helicobacter pylori: An infection with the bacterium manifests itself in the form of stomach problems or ulcers. You should be treated as quickly as possible to prevent cancer.
2. Antimontrioxid: This substance is contained in flame retardants and is mainly found in textiles or plastics. The use of the drug should be avoided if possible to reduce the risk of cancer.
3. Haloacetic acids: They have carcinogenic potential and are sometimes formed as a byproduct of the disinfection of our normal drinking water. Therefore, changes will be required here in the future. The following six haloacetic acids have been added to the list: bromochloroacetic acid, bromodichloroacetic acid, chlorodibromoacetic acid, dibromoacetic acid, dichloroacetic acid, and tribromoacetic acid.
