Abortion ceases to be a crime in Mexico by decision of the Supreme Court

Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled that state laws prohibiting abortion are unconstitutional and violate women’s rights.

A historic decision – unanimous among the judges, in a country dominated by the Catholic Church – and which applies to the entire Mexican territory. Religious and conservative groups condemned the decision, citing beliefs in the rights of unborn fetuses.

In Latin America, many countries had already legalized abortion.
