The CNN TV channel got acquainted with an excerpt of the biography of the owner of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter (now X) Elon Musk, written by the American journalist and writer Walter Isaacson. The book suggests that in 2022, Musk secretly ordered his engineers to shut down the Starlink satellite communications network near the coast of Crimea in order to thwart Ukraine’s attack on the Russian naval fleet in Sevastopol using surface drones.

Isaacson writes in his book, which will officially go on sale on September 12, that Musk’s decision was caused by fear of Russia’s response. The head of SpaceX allegedly communicated with Russian officials and was sure after these conversations that Russia could use nuclear weapons in a similar situation.

In August, The New Yorker, citing sources in the Pentagon, wrote that Musk regularly consulted with Putin about the war in Ukraine, including the use of Starlink. The businessman himself confirmed only one conversation with Putin.

On July 30, 2023, it became known that the US Department of Defense will buy 400-500 Starlink terminals from Musk’s company, after which the department itself will be able to determine where and how they can be used.
