Less than a year before the European elections in June 2024, the standoff continues, on the left, between the supporters of a list in the colors of the New Ecological and Social Popular Union (Nupes) and the others. At a press conference on September 6, the Nupes European Youth Forum presented a “common program” composed of 166 measures on the “social, ecological and democratic emergencies”. “All we are missing is a list to support this program”, said Julien Vaillant, coordinator of Jeunes Génération.s.

Objective of the maneuver: to exercise “pressure shot” to go “convince our elders”, continued Emma Rafowicz, president of the Young Socialists. Clovis Daguerre, of the Young Ecologists, warned of the risk of “losing the cultural battle” facing the right and the far right, standing out from Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV), which defends tooth and nail an autonomous strategy. Only the young communists were not present, aligned with the decision of the party’s national secretary, Fabien Roussel, to go it alone.

Activist for a unified campaign, Jean-Luc Mélenchon did not shy away from his pleasure, seeing in this outing “the best response to the sectarianism of the previous left party apparatuses”. “Why not a common list of these young unionists? »he continued, in reference to an idea launched by the young “rebellious” Aurélien Le Coq, a few hours earlier. “If to unblock the situation, we need a list of young people from Nupes, if this is the only choice left to us, then why not”, warned the latter.

“Open to all discussions”

On September 5, La France insoumise (LFI) distanced itself from Ségolène Royal. At the LFI summer days in Valence, the former socialist presidential candidate offered them the opportunity to lead a union of the left for the 2024 election. Without formally validating this proposal, Jean-Luc Mélenchon was enthusiastic. “I want to approve his initiative, his contribution to the battle for union”, he commented, Saturday August 26, on TF1.

But the prospect of seeing the former socialist disembark created unrest among the “rebellious” activists. The movement therefore deemed it necessary to “unplug it”. While thanking the former presidential candidate for her offer of services, LFI ultimately said it was more favorable to “a head of the list from EELV”. Ségolène Royal preferred not to comment on this update. Privately, she sees no inconsistency with the statements of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who has not officially designated her as his candidate. She affirms that she continues her fight, and continues to pose in “unifying force” to the left.
