Chartreuse massif: hikers banned from the mountain, hunters have “privatized” it

The mountain as the last bastion of absolute freedom? This received idea is far from being true. In one of the most spectacular places in the Alps, hunters no longer want to see hikers. The scene takes place on the foothills of the Chartreuse, where the astonishing rocky Tower lets the day pass through a 30 m double arch. Highlighted in 2006 by Pascal Sombardier, author of hiking books, this geological curiosity attracts many walkers, to the great dismay of the owner of the place, the Marquis Bruno de Quinsonas-Oudinot, who rents the land to a hunting company.
