DISPATCH — American explorers have discovered an unidentified golden specimen deep in the depths of the ocean, near Alaska. It may not be much, but it “reminds us how little we know about our own planet”…

It was a remote-controlled robot from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that first came across the “thing”. At some 3,300 meters depth, a rounded prominence with golden glow about 10 cm in diameter.

“As the cameras zoomed in, scientists were perplexed about its identification,” says NOAA in one of its notes, “with early ideas ranging from (possible) hooks of a dead sponge to coral or the husk of a ‘an egg”.

As reported by AFP, the team of scientists brought the unidentified marine object back onto the ship on the surface. In the open air, it’s flaccid and shiny and fits in the hand.

“Aren’t the great depths deliciously strange?” asks the expedition coordinator, Sam Candio, quoted by NOAA. “We are still not able to identify it, we simply know that it has a biological origin”, declares the scientist. And to warn: “We will probably not know more until it is (studied) in laboratory conditions”.

If it is perhaps nothing, Sam Candio was keen to emphasize that underwater exploration can make it possible to discover new species, sometimes the origin of new medical treatments, for example.
