And at ” Red line “ on the “jobs in tension” residence permit had lost its color during the summer, the President of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, took it upon himself to give a lick of paint to the name of his party, Les Républicains (LR). Inflexible, the right refuses to hear about regularization of undocumented immigrants in sectors under tension in an “immigration” law that has become the Arlesian law of this five-year term. “To those who tell us “we have needs in professions in shortage”, let’s take care of our three million unemployed”, said the President of the Senate on BFM-TV, Wednesday. “Regularization in professions in tension is not negotiable”pushes the same day the boss of LR senators, Bruno Retailleau, in an interview with Figaro.

This intransigence is not new. Since the presentation of the main lines of the text in November 2022 in The world by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, and that of Labor, Olivier Dussopt, The Republicans have always seen in this article 3 a call for air favoring illegal immigration. “We are sending a message to the smugglers: their small traffic in human slaves will continue”estimated at the time the elected representative of Hauts-de-Seine Philippe Juvin, although he was ranked among the “Macron-compatible” deputies.

For the right, this article is the original sin of a text which bears the mark of Macronian “at the same time”, with what is considered a concession to the left wing of the majority embodied by the deputy for Vienne Sacha Houlie. The main defender of this system, the president of the law committee in the Assembly, experienced a shock at the end of August, when the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, spoke privately of doing away with the allusion to professions in tension, judging her “poorly worded”. But the trial balloon deflates quite quickly and LR has no time to gloat. Mr. Houlié now claims to have solid guarantees from the Elysée and Matignon.

“We are unanimous”

Back to square one. Gérald Darmanin needs his former party and his 62 deputies to vote on a text that is close to his heart, but the latter want to remove him from “professions in tension”. How to find a passing voice? The painful battle over pension reform had the merit of teaching Macronie that the LR group formed anything but a homogeneous bloc. So should we try to exploit possible dissensions?

Under cover of anonymity, certain deputies – among the most liberal in the group – find some qualities in a system responding to the concerns of employers in sectors such as catering and construction. “Without going as far as automatic regularization, we must take the situation into account. These people work, pay taxes in sectors where it is difficult to recruit”, advances one of them. Another estimates that between fifteen and twenty of his colleagues would be open to discussion on the subject.
