The Germany ticket is subsidized with billions, but it achieves little. The federal and state governments must spend the money better.

Let’s imagine that a baker sells nine rolls a day and is not satisfied with them. So he makes his rolls bigger and nicer, and he also sells them at bargain prices – and then he sells ten rolls a day, one more than before. Is this campaign a great success? No. Our baker needs to think seriously about his offer.

And that brings us to the Germany ticket. After four months, it is clear that very few people have been introduced to public transport. Ten million passengers have bought one, and less than a million of them are new to buses and trains. Some others have previously bought individual tickets and are now opting for the subscription, not least because the subscription is now much cheaper than before. Only one in 20 tours with the Deutschlandticket actually replaces a car journey. Last week it also became clear: after less than three months, one in ten people had already canceled their subscription, especially new customers. At the same time, the number of cars in Germany is growing to a new record.
