According to the head of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department, Susana Galicia Amor, the majority of patients who request care have difficulty breathing, fatigue, and little tolerance for physical activity.

These symptoms, added to the heart and muscle condition and chronic-degenerative comorbidities that they suffer in many cases, make it difficult and limit the performance of their daily living activities and affect their emotional state.

The head of the Department of Pulmonary Rehabilitation highlighted that all people with disabilities due to chronic respiratory diseases can obtain benefits with this program.

In this regard, the INER specialist, Esperanza Lourdes Trejo Mellado, agreed that this program is central in the treatment of chronic respiratory diseases at the institute, since it reduces respiratory symptoms, improves the ability to move, and the independence to carry out activities. daily life and reintegration into the workplace and social environment.

He said that, in the world, chronic lung diseases affect 210 million people and are an important cause of morbidity and mortality. As an example, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) causes disability and ranks seventh.

In Mexico, COPD affects 7.8 percent of people over 40 years of age. This prevalence increases with age, so that in those over 60 years of age it reaches 18.4 percent.

The doctor assigned to the Department of Pulmonary Rehabilitation explained that patients with chronic respiratory disease suffer from cardiovascular conditions; limitation in the movement of upper and lower extremities; decreased exercise tolerance, strength, muscular endurance, and basic hand functions; in some cases, voice problems.
