The furniture trade sector grew between 2021 and 2022

He Informa DBK Sector Observatory ensures that the sector furniture trade experienced a significant rebound throughout the 2021-2022 biennium, in a context of recovery of the economic pulse and remarkable market dynamism.

Thus, after increasing by 19.4% in 2021 and recovering the pre-pandemic level, the turnover derived from retail sales increased by 11% in 2022, reaching 3,830 million euros. The upward trend in prices largely contributed to this evolution.

All segments evolved very positively. Home furniture sales reached 2,680 million euros in 2022, 10.3% more, concentrating 70% of the total market value.

For its part, the highest turnover growth was recorded in the kitchen furniture segment (+13.6%), giving rise to a figure of 670 million euros and a share of 17.5% of the total.

It is estimated that the specialized trade accounted for 87% of retail furniture sales in 2022, with the rest being distributed among hypermarkets, department stores and DIY establishments.

Market penetration of the online channel continued to advance, although at a slower pace than in previous years. It is estimated that it currently reaches around 14% of sales of furniture, lighting and household items in value.

Forecasts point to a notable slowdown in growth in retail furniture sales in the short term, as a result of the loss of household purchasing power and the weakening of the real estate market.

There is a tendency towards the concentration of the sector’s offering in the large chain stores present in the market. In 2022, the group of the top five operators together concentrated close to 50% of total sales.
