News from Angola – The historical work entitled “The Bantu in the vision of Mafrano”, by Angolan writer Maurício Francisco Caetano, was delivered to the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

According to the statement that Notícias de Angola had access to, the offer took place during a visit by the Portuguese President, to the Stand of Editora Perfil Criativo on the first day of the 2023 Book Festival, in Belém (Portugal).

On the occasion, the editor of Perfil Criativo, João Ricardo Rodrigues, recognized the opportunity for the publisher to be present at the Book Festival in Belém and took advantage, on behalf of Maurício Francisco Caetano’s family, to offer the two volumes of the collection “Os Bantu in the vision of Mafrano — Almost memories”, by Maurício Caetano (1916-1982).

João Rodrigues, on the other hand, said according to the note that it was also a moment to expand knowledge about the ethnolinguistic culture of the Bantu peoples described by Mafrano.

The collection is a posthumous work in three volumes, comprising more than 700 pages, reproducing research carried out by the author between 1947 and 1982.

The book contains descriptions of the ancestral life of the Bantu people more than five thousand years ago.

Maurício Francisco Caetano, “Mafrano”, observed the autochthonous habits and customs of Cabinda, Uíge, Malanje, Kwanza Norte and Dembos, with comparative studies between the legends of these peoples and the Greco-Roman legends that show, according to him, ways to better understanding of Bantu Cultural Anthropology, either through knowledge of their language, knowledge of their psychology and knowledge of their fables, History and Philosophy.

The first volume of the collection contains 212 pages and was prefaced by the archbishop emeritus of Lubango and 2001 Sakharov prize winner, Dom Zacarias Kamwenho, who considered the author to be Angola’s greatest anthropologist.

While the second volume was presented in Luanda, by the President of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST), Dom José Manuel Imbamba, on July 25, 2023, a date that also served to mark the 41st anniversary of the author’s physical death. .

Maurício Caetano in life, was a tax officer since 1954, secretary and National Director of the Ministry of Finance, until 1982, and is a founding member of the Union of Angolan Writers (UEA).

He also stood out as a teacher in several educational establishments.

The author left as a legacy works scattered across various newspapers and magazines, with emphasis on the newspapers «O Apostolado», “Angola Norte”, “O Angolense”, the Revista Angola of the African National League and the “Boletim de Finances”.

His vast literary collection is now being compiled in this collection with more than 700 pages that includes headings such as “Light Chronicles”, “Notes in Pencil”, “Episódios Vividos”, “Tertúlias”, cultural anthropology, short stories and texts read on the broadcaster Catholic “Rádio Ecclésia”, in Luanda.
