Jemaa El-Fna Square, Saturday at nightfall. Nearly 24 hours after the terrible earthquake that struck Morocco, in the famous central square of Marrakech, hundreds of earthquake victims are preparing to sleep on the ground. Small groups of residents from the medina district form on the immense square, sitting or lying on mats and blankets. Some have lost their homes, others fear aftershocks from the earthquake. Among the survivors, Ilham rocks her baby, barely seven days old, wrapped in a flowered swaddle. “We cannot stay at home. Me and my baby are not safe there. Just after the earthquake, cracks appeared along the walls of our rooms,” says the young mother.

Sitting next to her, Naggia, a 56-year-old widow, shows us the meager provisions she keeps at her feet in a plastic bag. A box of cheese spread and packets of crisps. Like all those who are preparing to spend the night on the asphalt, the fifty-year-old explains that she feels safer outside. “I can’t stay in my house. I’m too afraid she’ll collapse on me,” she whispers. With a lost look, she recalls the loss of a friend in the Mellah district on the evening of the earthquake. “She was 46 years old. She was holding another friend’s son. The ceiling collapsed on top of them. They are both dead”. Watch our video report at the top of the article.
