In Baku, a young girl was brought before the court on charges of treason. Fidan Aliyeva He is accused of spying on Armenia, passing information about Azerbaijan through an employee of the special service of this country.

20-year-old Aliyeva was charged with Article 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code. The sanction of this article provides up to 20 years or life imprisonment. However, in Azerbaijan, according to the law, women and men over the age of 65 are not sentenced to life imprisonment.

A few months ago, Fidan Aliyeva was detained by the State Security Service. His case is currently being considered at the Baku Court of Serious Crimes.

He says that he thinks the person he met on Telegram is Russian

According to the information obtained by RFE/RL, Aliyeva was among the participants of the protest that started on December 12, 2022 and lasted for 138 days on the part of the Lachin-Khankendi road passing through Shusha territory. It is alleged that he sent information, videos and photos to an employee of the Armenian special service agency whom he met through the Telegram channel. Some of the images are reported to be from different parts of Baku.

However, Fidan Aliyeva does not feel guilty. He says that the accusation of spying on Armenia is untrue. Because he thought the person he met on Telegram was Russian. According to him, he met that person for a personal purpose, not to transfer information. “Before, I never knew he was Armenian. My goal was to meet like an ordinary person. I had no other goal – to provide information about Azerbaijan.”

As for the photo-video issue, Aliyeva said that the other party sometimes asked her to take pictures of certain places and send them, and she did.

Judicial investigations in Aliyeva’s case continue.
