Apple Rumored to Discontinue Silicone Accessories, Transitioning to More Eco-Friendly Materials

With Apple’s highly anticipated “Wonderlust” event just around the corner, rumors are swirling about possible changes to the company’s accessory lineup. According to an anonymous source cited by MacRumors, Apple may start a gradual discontinuation of its popular silicone accessories, in addition to retiring its leather cases.

The report explains that the transition away from silicone is not expected to happen immediately. Instead, it will occur over time, with existing models not receiving new color options. This move is said to be motivated by Apple’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The plan is to replace silicone accessories with more eco-friendly and next-generation materials.

Currently, Apple sells a wide range of accessories made from silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer, including iPhone cases, Apple Watch bands, and AirTag accessories. The switch away from these materials could prove to be a larger undertaking than the move away from leather, as rubber and fluoroelastomer are commonly used in the most popular and affordable Apple Watch bands.

However, leaks suggest that starting with the iPhone 15 lineup, Apple will introduce a new premium material called “FineWoven” for its iPhone cases. Described as an “imitation leather” material, these cases will be made from an environmentally friendly fabric. Additionally, there are rumors of a new Apple Watch band style featuring a magnetic clasp design and made from the same woven material as the FineWoven iPhone cases. This new band is expected to be priced at $99, making it more affordable than some of Apple’s current offerings.

Apple’s “Wonderlust” event, where the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro are expected to be announced, will take place on Tuesday, September 12, at 10 a.m. PT.
