The Gotthard road tunnel in Switzerland was closed indefinitely on Sunday afternoon due to a crack in the tunnel ceiling. “Concrete pieces came loose near the north tunnel portal and fell onto the road,” the Swiss authorities said on Monday. The tunnel was then immediately closed and no one was hurt.
Detour via San Bernadino route and Gotthard Pass
The authorities explained that initial investigations had shown a “crack in the false ceiling over a length of 25 metres”. The exact extent of the damage and the cause have not been clarified at the current time. For security reasons, the blocking will remain in place “until further notice”. Traffic will be diverted via the San Bernardino route and the Gotthard pass road.
