Gabriel Attal affirmed that there would be “a teacher in front of each student” from this start of the school year. The promise of the Minister of National Education is once again undermined by a SNES-FSU investigationthe main teachers’ union in middle and high schools.

According to the organization’s survey, conducted in 508 secondary schools and carried out between September 1 and 8 by its own section managers, at least one teacher is missing in 48% of these high schools and colleges. The union does not specify whether or not these absences have been replaced, although the government has made a commitment to provide an alternative “systematic” for each of them.

“These results confirm that the shock of attractiveness did not occur”deplores the SNES-FSU. “Gabriel Attal must reopen the salary file to fight against the lack of attractiveness of our profession”insisted its general secretary, Sophie Vénétitay, Monday September 11 on Franceinfo.

The start of the new school year was once again marked by the crisis in the recruitment of teachers – a phenomenon which has increased since last year –, with in 2023 more than 3,100 positions not filled in the teacher competitions. The executive highlights its revaluation policy “historical”which is particularly aimed at early careers.

Geographic disparities

Despite the budgetary effort made, the unions welcomed these measures with great reservation, and with frank hostility the establishment of the “teacher pact”. This provides for salary increases in return for additional tasks, in particular short-term replacements, a sea serpent in national education. The government estimates that it can act as a remedy for the fifteen million hours not replaced per year.

The SNES-FSU survey, accompanied by a call for testimonies from teachers under the hashtag #larabordenvrai, also confirms territorial disparities. As of September 7, at least one teacher was missing in 60% of establishments dependent on the Créteil academy, according to the union. As of September 4, at least one teacher was missing in more than half of the establishments in Dordogne, and in a third of these as of September 8.
