On August 30 in the exclusive and emblematic neighborhood of Palermo, in Buenos Aires, Mariano Barbieri lost his life after he was stabbed directly in the heart by a mobile phone. A heart that not only could not continue beating for Mariano, but for an entire Argentine society dismayed by the fact. One more of the many that dramatically happen every day, without distinction of scenarios.

Mariano was a civil engineer, married, with a newborn baby, and a handball player. A normal kid, as his compatriots would say. His cruel stabbing has moved the entire country, in a social context of insecurity and crime, a direct consequence of the lack of work, education and its symptoms. Argentina is facing national elections and this case shocked society due to the crudeness of the event and the impunity with which the murderer continued his walk through the city. An impunity that was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. The first word that comes to mind is injustice, summarizes a friend of Mariano.

Is the frequency of this type of events being naturalized in Argentine society? Has calling these tragedies as crime waves lost its semantics these days, as they happen every day? Because, ultimately, waves are undulations that occur between more or less regular times and crimes as aberrant as this are the order of the day.

Mariano had gone out to see the super blue moon in the sky of Buenos Aires. She made a video call with Maricel, his wife, because her newborn son was crying a lot. While walking through one of the best-known parks in the city, he was attacked by a man who stabbed him directly at the level of the heart and stole his cell phone. Minutes after the attack, Mariano walked in agony, in his last attempt at survival, the last 300 meters until he reached the first business he found.

Once inside the refrigerator, located in one of the most expensive corners of the city of Buenos Aires, Mariano managed to tell everyone present his name, Instagram account, that it had been stolen and that they should call 911. (Emergency Telephone Assistance). A few seconds later, he collapsed on the floor with his hand on his chest. Faced with such a scenario, the customers and employees of the business assisted him as best they could, still stunned and disconcerted by what had happened.

The refrigerator’s surveillance cameras recorded the entire scene and helped the competent authorities investigate the case.

They managed to get him out of the premises alive. During the transfer to the hospital, as explained by Alberto Crescenti, head of the Emergency Medical Care System (SAME), the cardiac massage continued. The stab entered the atrium, which caused a two-stage hemorrhage. In these cases the pericardium fills with blood, which is what happened. At Fernndez – the public hospital where he was admitted – he worked very hard, almost an hour, but unfortunately it was a fatal injury, with very little chance of saving him, the health worker said.

Thanks to a reconstruction of the events with recordings obtained by security cameras, the City Police and Justice were able to find the alleged murderer. The detainee is a 29-year-old man who was collecting cardboard and reportedly told a group of friends that he had stabbed a man. He has 14 criminal records, being in and out of prison uninterruptedly. Although the accused denied having been the attacker, a witness pointed him out in a lineup held by the prosecutor.

The government confirmed that the alleged murderer was arrested. The evidence that we have presented to justice allows us to have peace of mind that he is responsible and that he will be convicted, the Minister of Justice and Security of the City said in a press conference. Gustavo Coria.

The city police had investigated the area but it was a journalist from a national media outlet, who was covering the case, who found the knife with which the murderer had committed the crime. After the discovery of the knife by a journalist, on social networks the local police are widely questioned and criticized for their effectiveness and operations in the case.

Insecurity is an everyday thing. There is a lack of lighting in the square where they killed him. It’s a wolf’s mouth. Police missing. Approximately a year and a half ago, everything deteriorated. It was filled with homeless people. Before there were 4 or 5, that one knew, but today we see the streets full said the manager of a building near the business where Mariano got help.

From crime to #IDon’tWantToDie

You are, were and will be the love of my life, Mariano Barbieri’s wife wrote on social networks. His wife gave him an emotional farewell message. My love, my baby’s father, I love you until the last of my days, please give me the strength to raise our son, he will always know that his father was a crazy man who lived life to the fullest, the woman posted, along with a photo of ly his son.

Mariano was a prosecutor for the La Libertad Avanza party, led by Javier Milei, a candidate who presented himself as an alternative to the two parties that have traditionally governed the country. He achieved a surprising result with more than 30% of the support of the electoral roll in the primary, open, simultaneous and mandatory elections (PASO) that were held on August 13. In the situation of uncertainty of a society that does not find even a conservative reference that can predict a promising socio-economic scenario.

The candidate corrected a journalist who asked him about the death of Mariano Barbieri. He didn’t die. He was murdered with a knife. Here in the City there is also insecurity, it seems that what they sell us are all lies.

This type of crime and others, which in a hateful comparison turn out to be of a lesser caliber, have become the unwanted but sadly assumed normality of a society that is fissured on many of its fronts. It is complex to distinguish which of these fronts can still react to an impunity that is far from being called a crime in its purest concept and is rather close to being an entrenched cancer with no prognosis for a cure in a society that already has a thick skin and sees little. feasible to reverse it, or change it. Everything seems to be a regrettable consequence of a perverse socio-economic context that is exterminating pure stabbing.

We want to ask for justice and on the other hand we don’t want to die, were my brother’s last words. We want people to approach the avenue with the motto ‘we don’t want to die’ said Fernando, Mariano’s brother.

His family and friends are carrying out a solidarity fundraising campaign for his wife Maricel and his three-month-old son, Luca. Almost two weeks after the case and after the engineer’s funeral, the family organizes massive marches in the city to demand justice.
