On August 30 in the exclusive and emblematic neighborhood of Palermo, in Buenos Aires, Mariano Barbieri lost his life after he was stabbed directly in the heart by a mobile phone. A heart that not only could not continue beating for Mariano, but for an entire Argentine society dismayed by the fact. One more of the many that dramatically happen every day, without distinction of scenarios.
Mariano was a civil engineer, married, with a newborn baby, and a handball player. A normal kid, as his compatriots would say. His cruel stabbing has moved the entire country, in a social context of insecurity and crime, a direct consequence of the lack of work, education and its symptoms. Argentina is facing national elections and this case shocked society due to the crudeness of the event and the impunity with which the murderer continued his walk through the city. An impunity that was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. The first word that comes to mind is injustice, summarizes a friend of Mariano.
Is the frequency of this type of events being naturalized in Argentine society? Has calling these tragedies as crime waves lost its semantics these days, as they happen every day? Because, ultimately, waves are undulations that occur between more or less regular times and crimes as aberrant as this are the order of the day.
Mariano had gone out to see the super blue moon in the sky of Buenos Aires. She made a video call with Maricel, his wife, because her newborn son was crying a lot. While walking through one of the best-known parks in the city, he was attacked by a man who stabbed him directly at the level of the heart and stole his cell phone. Minutes after the attack, Mariano walked in agony, in his last attempt at survival, the last 300 meters until he reached the first business he found.
Once inside the refrigerator, located in one of the most expensive corners of the city of Buenos Aires, Mariano managed to tell everyone present his name, Instagram account, that it had been stolen and that they should call 911. Faced with such a scenario, the customers and employees of the business assisted him as best they could, still stunned and disconcerted by what had happened.
The refrigerator’s surveillance cameras recorded the entire scene and helped the competent authorities investigate the case.

The detainee is a 29-year-old man who was collecting cardboard and reportedly told a group of friends that he had stabbed a man. He has 14 criminal records, being in and out of prison uninterruptedly. Although the accused denied having been the attacker, a witness pointed him out in a lineup held by the prosecutor.
