More than a hundred pieces of cave drawings older than 24,000 years were found in a cave in Spain, reports IFLScience. Researchers became aware of the ancient works of art in July 2021, but their full exploration and examination took until 2023.

Archaeologists have so far discovered more than 110 carved or painted drawings depicting at least 19 different animals, including seven horses, seven deer, two proboscis, an ox and two unidentified species. Other paintings feature geometric shapes such as squares or pipe-like markings.

The works were found in the cave called Cova Dones, 400 meters from the entrance. Cova Dones is a popular attraction among tourists and hikers, yet it took many years before anyone noticed the special patterns covering the walls.

According to experts, the newly discovered cave drawings were created with unprecedented skill and methods, including the shading technique, which is not typical of any other prehistoric paintings on the Iberian Peninsula.
