Questions “clearer” et “more intelligible”as well as the use of drone photos, to “more realism” : the highway code exam has a new look from Tuesday, September 12 with the renewal of all its questions. “The difficulty should not be in the question but in the answer to be given”explained Monday Florence Guillaume, interministerial delegate for road safety, during a press briefing.

The new questions have been written “in consultation with professionals in the sector”but also with a “language simplification professional”, specified Ms. Guillaume. The new General Theory Examination (ETG) question bank now includes 1,037 questions.

Questions “where you put yourself in the other user’s shoes”

Work on renewing the question bank has begun “almost two years ago”, underlined the interministerial delegate for road safety. The last modification of the questions of the highway code exam dates back to 2016.

In order to avoid confusion among candidates, complex terms have been removed from the questions. Like the mention “ring” to denote a roundabout, sometimes used in older questions, which has been removed.

Faced with the rise of bicycles and scooters, new questions “empathetic” “where you put yourself in the place of the other user”have been added, she said. “More than half of road deaths were in a vehicle with less than four wheels”recalled the interministerial delegate for road safety.

This change of point of view in certain questions is thus indicated by a yellow icon in the upper right corner of the image, in which the symbol “pedestrian”, “motorcycle” or even “child” appears. These questions include, for example, the following scenario: “A scooter user is vulnerable because: his balance is precarious (yes or no), his small size makes him difficult to detect (yes or no). »

“Forget the idea of trick questions” and “save lives”

On the form, the visuals of the questions have also been modified to “more realism”, in particular with drone shots instead of computer-generated images. A yellow rectangle has been added to the images to more clearly identify the vehicle concerned by the question.

The mention “several correct answers” is also now displayed as soon as two answers are expected. The objective of renewing the question bank is also “to make people forget the idea of trick questions”insisted Ms. Guillaume.

“Our ambition is to save lives”she said, adding that the review was mainly to ensure that “Those who are on the road are those who have all the right knowledge to circulate”.

Ms. Guillaume, however, wanted to reassure the candidates: “the highway code has not changed”. Candidates, who take the exam on a tablet or computer, must answer forty questions taken from the database, illustrated by images or videos.

The questions have been divided between nine themes since 2006, including ” the driver “, ” the road “ or even the “rules of use of the vehicle in relation to respect for the environment”. The conditions of examinations are not modified either: thirty-five correct answers are always required on the forty questions put to the candidates. The code also remains valid for five years until you pass the practical exam.

In 2022, more than 1.8 million candidates took the ETG, with an overall pass rate of 57%. According to figures provided by the inter-ministerial delegation, 45% of applicants take less than a year to obtain the code.
