The Ukrainian counteroffensive continues and Kyiv troops are gradually recovering territories occupied by Russia. Thus, one of the main points where the war is taking place is in the Black Sea and in Crimea, a peninsula that Moscow annexed in 2014 and where attacks have not stopped since then. The Ukrainian army, in one of its last battles, has managed to take control of the Boyka Towers, occupied by Russia since 2015.

The Boyka Towers are a set of platforms located south of Odessa and west of Crimea. They serve as maritime control posts in the Black Sea. Ukrainian military intelligence (GUR) announced this Monday that Kyiv forces have regained control of these four oil and gas extraction platforms located near the coast.

“The ‘Boyka Towers’ are oil and gas extraction platforms near the Crimean coast, on the Black Sea,” Ukrainian military intelligence explained in a statement. “Russia occupied them in 2015 and since the beginning of the large-scale invasion has used them for military purposes,” the note adds.

The platforms over which kyiv has regained control are named Petro Godovalets, Ukraine, Tavrida and Sivash. The GUR describes the operation in which the platforms were recovered as “unprecedented.” “It was carried out by military intelligence units (GUR),” the statement explains.

“During the operation, the special forces managed to seize valuable trophies,” says the note, which explains that Ukraine captured unguided aerial missiles for helicopters and a radar used by the Russians to monitor the movement of ships in the Black Sea.
