Julián Ovejero, arrested in 2021 for killing a man with whom he had met through an application with 65 stab wounds, has admitted in court that the victim could not defend himself from the “sudden” attack that surprised him from behind, a confession with which he managed to have his sentence reduced from 25 years to 20 years in prison. This Tuesday morning, the Provincial Court of Madrid held the second session of the hearing for the crime that occurred on February 24, 2018 in an apartment in Carabanchel. The murderer, 23 years old at the time of the crime, met his victim on Grindr, the application for sexual encounters.
To obtain fewer years in prison, the defendant has acknowledged in his statement the accusation of the representative of the Public Ministry and has retracted what he stated in March 2022 during the investigation when he assured that he committed the crime “full of narcotic substances.” Now, he maintains that he did not consume drugs and that only the victim took substances because of the way he “acted and spoke.” “I wouldn’t know how to explain what happened,” he said when asked by the prosecutor, to whom he detailed that the attack with a kitchen knife began in the room and moved to the entrance of the home.

After that, he fled to his country and was arrested three years later. His statement leads to classifying the facts as a crime of murder and not as a crime of homicide as requested yesterday by the defendant’s lawyer, who indicated that she would ask the court to consider in the sentence the mitigating circumstances of drug addiction, mental alteration and outburst. The parties have reached an agreement to reduce the sentence to be imposed.
For this reason, the Chamber has waived part of the planned evidence and the trial will conclude tomorrow. In his conclusions, the prosecutor has modified his classification of the facts and has withdrawn the crime of theft that he requested. Furthermore, he has indicated that he will request that he be sentenced to 20 years compared to the 25 years in prison that he requested, to which the family’s lawyer, lawyer Julen Martínez, has agreed. At the conclusion of the hearing, the lawyer stated that the family was looking for the truth to come out and “today it came out” with the complete recognition of the facts. For this reason, they have joined the prosecutor’s request to reduce the sentence request by five years in prison.

At the trial, the National Police inspector who directed the investigation has detailed the investigations carried out to identify the accused as the dumper of the victim’s cell phone data. The Police booked the suspect based on the recordings captured by the surveillance camera installed on the stairs of the victim’s porch. At the hearing, the Court showed the jury the photographs that the Scientific Police took when they arrived at the home and that show how the deceased was naked in a pool of blood in the living room of the home. The accused has not at any time looked at the images that showed his victim.
The prosecutor and the private prosecution classify the crime as murder and request 25 years in prison, a sentence that will likely be reduced in the final reports. The family requests that the aggressor undergo specific anti-violence training and medical treatments.
In the statement before the judge, to which Europa Press had access, the murderer maintained that they met on February 23, 2018 through an app and that the victim lived near him, sharing sadomasochistic tastes in sexual relations. At one point, “a fierce fight” broke out after he cut her in the neck as part of the violent games they played.
“I was full of substances and very crazy,” the accused said, then indicating that it got out of hand. “It was two minutes of madness and I don’t remember more because I was full of substances,” he stated to the instructor, to whom he indicated that he stabbed him but not seriously. The victim fell on his back, he panicked and left the apartment without knowing that he had died. “I didn’t know how to react. I didn’t know what to do. I saw everything cloudy,” he added. The murderer showed his remorse before the magistrate and assured that it was the fault of the substances that he had consumed since he was 15 years old. “I am Catholic, apostolic and Roman,” he said then.
