Convicted Killer Escapes from Prison, Steals Rifle from Homeowner’s Garage

The manhunt for convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante continues after he escaped from an eastern Pennsylvania prison nearly two weeks ago. Considered “armed and extremely dangerous,” Cavalcante stole a rifle from a local homeowner’s garage, prompting the resident to fire several shots at him as he fled. Police urge the public to remain cautious as the fugitive remains at large.

Cavalcante, 34, was spotted on Monday night in Chester County’s South Coventry Township, approximately 20 miles from the prison, according to an emergency alert. The resident called the police at around 10:10 p.m., reporting that a shirtless male entered his garage and took a rifle. The homeowner fired his pistol at Cavalcante, but it is unclear whether the fugitive was injured.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police, FBI, ATF, and US Marshals, have launched a massive search effort, with approximately 500 officers involved. They have established a perimeter spanning several miles and sent out reverse 911 calls to residents within three miles, warning them to stay indoors, lock their doors, and secure their vehicles.

The rifle in Cavalcante’s possession is a .22-caliber with a scope and flashlight, making him even more dangerous, according to Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens. The search area is challenging due to its heavily wooded and hilly terrain, making it difficult to locate the fugitive.

Authorities defended their efforts, stating that they are doing everything possible to capture Cavalcante. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed confidence in the Pennsylvania State Police and reassured the public that they are working diligently to apprehend the fugitive.

Cavalcante, who was serving time for the murder of his former girlfriend, escaped from Chester County Prison on August 31. He stabbed her 38 times in front of her children before attempting to flee to Mexico and then Brazil, his native country. Additionally, Cavalcante is wanted in a 2017 homicide case in Brazil.

Despite several sightings, law enforcement remains optimistic that Cavalcante won’t be able to leave Pennsylvania. Citizens are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities as the manhunt continues.
