The relationship between Germans and their nation was always somewhat difficult. After the time of National Socialism, in the divided German state, a bond was found that not only connected the old Federal Republic but also with the citizens of the GDR: the D-Mark. Born 75 years ago, died more than twenty years ago, even today, especially those over forty see it as a national symbol.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the currency reform, Frank Stocker, economics and finance editor of “Welt”, has dedicated a successful book to the history of the D-Mark. With “The Deutsche Mark”, the political scientist and historian has not only written an extremely readable work with just the right number of net pages of 312 pages. Rather, under the apt subtitle “How a currency became a myth,” Stocker specifically deals with the myths and narratives that have made the D-Mark the national symbol whose transfiguration sometimes takes on messianic traits.
