The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was instructed to close the embassy at the expense of the funds provided for the maintenance of this institution.

The diplomatic mission of which country will represent the interests of Belarusian citizens in Slovakia has not been announced, but the Belarusians living there were recently transferred to Austria for consular registration.

Diplomatic relations between the states began on January 14, 1993. In 2002, the General Consulate of Belarus in Bratislava was transformed into an embassy. In June 2019, the Chairman of the National Assembly of Slovakia Andrei Danka paid a visit to Minsk and met with Alexander Lukashenko. Ihar Leschenya worked as an ambassador to Slovakia from 2016 to 2020. After the violence of security forces against peaceful protesters in 2020, he resigned. On August 29, Belarusian democratic leader Svyatlana Tsikhanovskaya discussed issues of assistance to Belarusian volunteers and veterans, as well as “provocations by Lukashenka’s regime” at a meeting with Slovakia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Vlahovskyi. “Since 2020, Slovakia has consistently supported our work in the international arena, joined the sanctions against Lukashenka’s regime, awarded scholarships to Belarusian students and scientists and, what is very important, continues to issue a large number of visas. These relations and this cooperation are very important for us,” Tsikhanovskaya noted after the meeting. After the 2020 presidential elections, Belarus’ diplomatic contacts with European countries were reduced to a minimum due to the non-recognition of the official voting results by the EU states and the subsequent imposition of sanctions.
