Clint Peay Appointed as New Interim Coach of the New England Revolution, Team Announces

by time news

The New England Revolution have announced Clint Peay as their new interim coach, effective immediately. Peay, who was previously the head coach of the Revolution’s MLS Next Pro side, New England Revolution II, will now take charge of the first team following the resignation of former coach and sporting director Bruce Arena.

The decision to appoint Peay comes after Arena was placed on leave last month while under investigation for “inappropriate and insensitive” remarks. The Revolution players had refused to train following Arena’s departure, expressing concerns about interim head coach Richie Williams’ involvement in the investigation.

Williams, who had taken over as interim coach after Arena’s departure, has a long history with Arena, dating back to their time together at the University of Virginia in the 1980s and 1990s. Williams was an important part of Arena’s successful D.C. United sides and had also worked alongside him in various capacities in MLS and with U.S. Soccer. However, sources within the club have revealed clashes between Williams and assistant coach Shalrie Joseph, including one physical altercation last season.

The Revolution also announced the departure of assistant coaches Dave van den Bergh and Shalrie Joseph, who had shown support for Arena on social media after he was placed on leave. Both coaches are not expected to return for the 2024 season.

The New England Revolution, currently second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 13-9-5, are scheduled to play the Colorado Rapids this Saturday under the new leadership of Clint Peay.
