Towards more ecological series evenings? The Audiovisual and Digital Regulatory Authority (Arcom) wants television platforms and services to encourage their users to choose less energy-intensive settings, it communicated on Wednesday September 13. In recommendation published in Official newspaperthe media “policeman” wants to encourage a reduction in the environmental impact of the consumption of audiovisual content.

It therefore asks on-demand audiovisual media services and video sharing services to implement, “if it proves technically possible, an energy saving type functionality, easily accessible and allowing all of the most environmentally friendly settings to be automatically applied”.

It could, for example, reduce the quality of the image or deactivate the automatic playback of videos, taking into account “terminal screen size” and the type of network used (WiFi or mobile network), explains Arcom, without giving further details.

Better inform users

Broadcasters are also invited to better inform their users about the levers capable of reducing their impact, such as switching off equipment (television, Internet box, TV box) when not in use. They must finally put in place “a common methodology for calculating the environmental impact of audiovisual uses” and produce an annual report on the actions implemented.

According to’Environment and Energy Agency (Ademe), digital technology represented nearly 2.5% of the French carbon footprint in 2020, or 17.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, and this share could triple by 2050.

A large part (78%) of this impact comes from the manufacturing of equipment, in particular that of large flat screens which also require long transport. The use of terminals represents 21% of carbon emissions and tends to increase with the development of uses, recalls Arcom.
