Jets head coach Robert Saleh has emphasized that this is Wilson’s team, and the Jets need to take a practical approach to support him. According to eight high-ranking decision-makers polled by The Athletic, it is unanimous that Wilson should be the starting quarterback with a veteran backup to aid him in case of emergency.
Last offseason, despite pursuing Rodgers, the Jets refused to trade Wilson as they believed in his potential and hoped to salvage their No. 2 pick in the 2021 draft. Now, the timetable for Wilson’s development has been accelerated, but rival decision-makers see this as an opportunity to find a silver lining in their quarterback situation.
If Wilson performs well with the help of Rodgers as a resource, it would benefit both the player and the organization. However, if the young quarterback struggles, the Jets would have enough information to consider alternative options after the season, potentially refocusing on Rodgers and using their 2024 first-round draft pick on a quarterback of the future.
Against the Bills, Wilson showed promise but also experienced ups and downs. It is essential to note that he was operating with a game plan designed for Rodgers. The Jets’ offense is built around a physical running game, and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett must continue to tap into this philosophy. The Jets will need a capable backup quarterback to step in if Wilson struggles or sustains an injury.
