María Avizanda has visited the Enfermera Isabel Zendal hospital to try to find out what fate will be given to the hospital that was born as a response to the pandemic, but which at the moment is almost a ghost hospital. The reporter has not obtained permission to enter nor has she been assisted by anyone responsible for the Health Department of the Community of Madrid.

On the other hand, he was able to interview Daniel Bernabéu, radiologist and spokesperson for the Amyts union. He summarizes the figure of Zendal as “a way of understanding health and politics in which it is more important to generate a symbol, something that lasts so that a politician is remembered, than to meet real needs for public service assistance.”

He assures that it has little sanitary function and that it is rather designed as a warehouse, a fair space that “does not have any of the characteristics of a hospital.” About 230 health workers work there, with about 14 or 15 doctors for an average of 70 patients. 100% of this staff has left other hospitals, and this, says Bernabéu, is “the diabolical thing about Zendal”: “To be able to provide care here it is done with resources from other centers.”

Furthermore, he explains that for it to function as a true hospital it would have to be completely remodeled since “it does not have operating rooms or its own staff.” It also does not have natural light and, as the expert explains, the Community of Madrid is trying to change the law so that hospitals do not require patients to be in rooms that receive natural light.

Thus, in conclusion, he says that if Madrid wants to have a Zendal and can afford it, “there are useless whims, the problem is that there are many needs, both health and social, so throwing money away here is a waste.” .
