Faced with the acceleration of extreme climatic events which places us at a tipping point in our civilization, we, scientists and experts, call on the National Assembly and the French government to take ambitious measures to contain climate change and mitigate its impacts. destructive effects.

From Europe to North America, from Asia to Africa, the summer of 2023 was marked by deadly heat waves, devastating fires and catastrophic floods. These events have shaken our societies and weakened our ecosystems. This is why it is imperative to recognize the urgency of action.

In a column published in The world On May 7, 2023, some of us urged TotalEnergies shareholders to vote against the company’s climate plan, which is very insufficient. We also asked the company to abandon its new fossil projects, including the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

Human rights violations

This giant oil pipeline project led by TotalEnergies in Uganda and Tanzania threatens sensitive ecosystems in East Africa. Its development has already contributed to documented human rights violations and, if exploited, would contribute substantially to increased global greenhouse gas emissions, selon le Climate Accountability Institute.

Despite our appeal, TotalEnergies shareholders approved its climate plan. We are therefore addressing you, political leaders, so that you can immediately take appropriate measures to preserve the habitable conditions of our planet.

As highlighted in the latest Group III report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), if investments in fossil fuels continue, energy production will remain synonymous with high emissions, which will make it difficult to achieve the objective set by the Paris Agreement of a warming of 1.5 ° C or 2°C. Indeed, respecting this objective will result in “stranded assets” [« stranded assets », des actifs qui vaudront de moins en moins, dévalués] since we will have to abandon infrastructure using fossil fuels prematurely, as well as fossil fuel reserves themselves.

Only a drastic, immediate and lasting reduction in greenhouse gas emissions would lead to a slowdown in climate change. To limit global warming to 1.5°C, emissions would need to be reduced by around 55% to 70% by 2040.
