Four signs threatening to kill the Mexican corrido singer Peso Pluma if he performs in Tijuana in October were placed in various parts of that city, bordering the United States, authorities reported this Tuesday.

The mayor of Tijuana, Montserrat Caballero, explained that the local prosecutor’s office is investigating whether the posters were placed by organized crime gangs or by someone else, and will evaluate whether the threats warrant canceling the concert of the artist, who admits to having written songs “on request.” ” of drug traffickers.

“It is my responsibility to protect the citizens of Tijuana and therefore in the coming days we will determine whether the concert takes place or not,” Caballero told reporters.

The show by the author of the hit “She Dances Sole” is scheduled for October 14.

The media spread the image of at least one of the posters with threats to the 24-year-old singer, which is signed with the acronym “CJNG”, corresponding to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the most powerful drug mafias in Mexico with a presence in several countries.

Caballero reported that the police have already arrested a person linked to the placement of the signs and that “until this moment” the artist’s team had not contacted the mayor’s office.

Peso Pluma, stage name of the singer Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, stands out for being the first Mexican to have placed almost a dozen songs among the 100 most popular in the United States, according to Billboard magazine, and in the global Top 50 of Spotify, references of the music industry.

The artist, who last June recorded a collaboration with the Argentine Bizarrap, appears in several videos wearing expensive designer clothing and displaying long weapons. In at least one of them he directly celebrates the also dominant Sinaloa cartel.

“We know that singers like (…) Peso Pluma advocate crime, so there are certain groups that get upset and unfortunately those who suffer the consequences are the citizens who want to attend their concerts and have a risk,” added the mayor.

Caballero ruled out, however, the possibility of prohibiting concerts or the dissemination of so-called narcocorridos in Tijuana, pointing out that parents are mainly responsible for the popularity of the genre among young people.

“It is not enough to just turn off the music, but to know why they are projected into those songs,” he said. AFP
