Nagercoil Establishes Dedicated Ward Amid Nipah Virus and Dengue Fever Outbreak

In response to the alarming spread of the Nipah virus and dengue fever, authorities in Nagercoil have taken swift action by inaugurating a separate ward at Government Medical College. The move aims to effectively isolate and treat patients affected by these highly contagious diseases.

The decision followed reports of five deaths caused by the typhoid virus in Kozhikode district, Kerala. As a nearby border district, Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu has implemented necessary preventive measures to combat the outbreak. All vehicles crossing the district border are being meticulously inspected at five checkpoints. Anyone exhibiting symptoms of fever is promptly quarantined and admitted to a government hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Moreover, Kanyakumari district is currently grappling with an outbreak of dengue fever, exacerbated by continuous rainfall. Consequently, the district administration has taken stringent precautionary measures to combat the spread of the disease. As a result of this proactive response, numerous individuals suffering from fever have been admitted to government and private hospitals for medical care. Shockingly, within a matter of weeks, the number of flu cases has surged to 60, with an additional 10 confirmed cases of dengue in the past week alone.

To tackle the rising number of fever cases, authorities have opened a special ward at Asarippallam Government Hospital in Nagercoil. This dedicated facility will admit patients suffering from fever and ensure they receive appropriate treatment. Officials from the medical college have expressed confidence in efficiently managing the influx of fever sufferers in the newly established ward.

In parallel efforts to combat the outbreak, the distribution of Nilavembu kashayaam, a traditional herbal medicinal concoction known for its fever-reducing properties, has commenced across the district. District Collector Sridhar has urged the public to prioritize safety by wearing face shields when leaving their homes, in an effort to minimize the transmission of these diseases.

It is crucial for residents to remain vigilant during this critical period. Health authorities recommend adhering to basic hygiene practices such as proper handwashing, wearing protective clothing, and maintaining a clean and sanitary environment. Timely reporting of any symptoms of fever or illness will also aid in controlling the outbreak and ensuring swift medical intervention.

By working together and adopting preventive measures, the community can combat the spread of Nipah virus and dengue fever, protecting the health and well-being of all residents in Nagercoil and surrounding areas.
