Every year, the Department of the Environment organizes the cleanup of waste of unknown origin on public lands. This year will be cleared five sitethis one land in three counties: Harju County, And yesVirumaa and Lääne-Viru County. A budget of 30 thousand euros is provided for cleaning, recycling or disposal of waste.

“Illegally removed and abandoned waste must be removed by the person who removed the waste. If the violator is not identified, then the responsibility for cleaning the area lies with the landowner. In the case of public land, waste removal falls on the shoulders of the Department of the Environment. It is worth noting that more and more people and enterprises are treating their waste responsibly, but supervisory inspectors are still issuing fines and orders for waste collection,” explained Eric Kosenkranius, Deputy Director General of the Department of the Environment for Natural Resources Management.

In February, the Department of the Environment organized the cleanup of paint barrels on Silikaltsiidi Street in Tallinn, where an illegal dump was organized ten years ago. The department identified the violator many years ago, but the company went bankrupt and did not remove the trash left behind. To date, waste that had a significant impact on the environment has been removed from Silikaltsiidi Street.

Garbage will also be removed from a plot of land in Narva and the village of Moldova in Ida-Viru County. In Lääne-Viru County, a plot of land in Azeri will be cleared of waste, and in Harju County, an area in the village of Vatsla.

Over the past 10 years, almost 70 objects have been cleared of garbage in this way.

Depending on the circumstances, the fine for littering can reach 1,200 euros for an individual, and for a legal entity – up to 400 thousand euros.
