Archaeologists discovered a Mayan palace in the archaeological zone of Kabah, one of the pre-Hispanic cities of the Puuc Route of Yucatán, in southeastern Mexico. Researchers have called the Petenero Palace a quadrangular structure.

“The building has a 26 meter extension and a main façade composed of a portico with eight pilasters and nine openings,” the general director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Diego Prieto Hernández, informed the media.

Lourdes Toscano Hernandezdirector of the site and archaeologist, explained that the conclusion of the restoration and research work in Kabah revealed a housing complex and more than 24,000 fragments of vessels from the Puuc Route and El Petén, Guatemala.

“The palace, which is located in the Yaxcán Group, has characteristics of El Petén and corresponds to the period 250 to 500 AD. C.”they indicated.

Migration from El Petén

The archaeologist explained that there are no hieroglyphic dates. “What tells us that the region is from El Petén is the way in which the city was organized at that time and we propose that an important migration from that site founded Kabah”, he detailed.

Kaabalocated 100 kilometers from the capital of Yucatán, has palaces and temples dedicated to Yum Chaac, the Mayan god of rain, as well as an arch that leads to the Sacbé (white road) of Uxmal, the most important pre-Columbian city in the Puuc Route.

The pre-Columbian city of Kabah, whose rescue and renovation work is within the Program for the Improvement of Archaeological Zones (Promeza) derived from the Mayan Train, also has a Great Pyramid north of a causeway.

The Great Pyramidwhich is not yet open to the public “and is not yet included in any rescue and restoration plan,” is made up of superimposed terraces, with rounded corners, as well as a staircase on the south side and a temple at the top with four rooms .

The building is in front of Sacbé 2where the Toscano team and José Huchim Herrera, director of Uxmal and the Puuc Route, discovered the quadrangle-type palace, whose roof is believed to be made of perishable material, such as guano palm.

He Petenero Palace It was decorated with motifs of feathers, beads and birds carved into its architecture.

Destination for archaeological tourism

Las new constructions rescued in Kabahwhich in the Mayan language means “Lord of the strong or powerful hand”, will expand the circuit of visits in the south of Yucatán.

The site has other buildings that housed Mayan royalty, called El Palacio and the Codz Poop—in the Mayan language it means “rolled carpet”—which corresponds to the Terminal Classic period (650-950 AD). Its façade is decorated with Chaac stone masks.

In Kabah there are 82 structures distributed over 22 kilometers. “The Puuc-style architecture and the history of the dignitaries of the Tutul dynasty, who dominated Kabah, will captivate visitors who arrive with the Mayan Train,” said tourist guide, Jesús Marcos Delgado Ku.

He added that Kabah is part of the Puu Routec (mountain range in Mayan) and includes the cities of Uxmal, Sayil, Labná, Xlapak, Chacmultún and the Loltún Caves.
