Paris Apple wants to avert the threatened recall of the iPhone 12 in France with improved software. The update was intended to bring the excessive levels of electromagnetic radiation measured by French authorities below the limits, the US company announced on Friday. “We look forward to iPhone 12 continuing to be available in France.”

The French radiation regulator ANFR measured excessive values when testing the iPhone 12 in a specific application scenario, which, however, is not part of the European testing standard. She therefore ordered a sales stop for Apple’s mobile phone, which was introduced in 2020. “The exceedance of the limit is related to a specific testing protocol used by French regulators and is not a safety risk,” emphasized Apple.

The French authorities welcomed the update and announced that they would test it as quickly as possible. Belgian authorities made similar statements. After publication of the ANFR findings, they announced their own investigations into possible health risks for smartphone users.

According to the information, the ANFR checked the so-called specific absorption rate (SAR). It indicates how strongly electromagnetic radiation is absorbed by a material and thus heated. According to medical studies, excessive SAR from cell phones can promote certain types of cancer.
