The miracle of the Espelette pepper: “This plant is damn resistant”

They had predicted the worst, and yet… Despite the terrible hail storm which fell on June 20 on the Espelette pepper fields (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), the 2023 production of the famous red spice could equal that, record, of 2021. If several producers lost everything, the plots which were not affected by hailstones “as big as ping-pong balls”, according to testimonies, benefited from largely favorable summer weather conditions. Even some fields seriously impacted by hail were able to start flowering again and produce peppers on damaged plants.
