In a report published by the ministry, it expected that illicit drugs produced in Mexico and sold in the United States would continue to kill more Americans than any other threat. “While terrorists pose a constant threat to the nation, drugs kill and injure far more people in the United States every year,” the report said.
The Department of Homeland Security said that last year, drug traffickers helped produce a more lethal mixture of fentanyl and put it on the market, which led to an increase in overdose deaths. Fentanyl is expected to remain the leading cause of drug-related deaths in the United States through 2024, according to the report. The report also notes that illicit drugs impact American communities because they foster “violent criminal enterprises, money laundering, and corruption that undermine the rule of law.” The Department of Homeland Security said it has invested in preventing these dangerous and illegal drugs from entering the country, confiscating more fentanyl, and arresting more people for crimes related to it.
