“This is a new stage in the escalation against press freedom and the right to information in France,” denounces the National Union of Journalists (SNJ). In a press release published Wednesday, several union bodies of journalists and photographers denounce the indictment of Yoan Sthul-Jäger for “degradation by an organized gang” and “criminal conspiracy”.
This photojournalist “has been working for several years on subjects linked to the environment and has documented numerous actions on these grounds,” assures the press release. It is one of them which has now caused him to be threatened by the law and deprived of his professional equipment.

80 hours of police custody
Yoan Sthul-Jäger went to a Lafarge cement plant in December 2022 to cover images of an action by environmental activists in Bouc-Bel-Air (Bouches-du-Rhône). As proof, his photos which were published in several media at the time, including Release, The world, The Parisian, list the signatories of the press release. But the professional was nevertheless awakened on June 20 at 6 a.m. by the anti-terrorist sub-directorate (SDAT) who came to pick him up from his home in order to place him in police custody for 80 hours.
“Photographing, filming, recording or writing about an activist act cannot be an offense; it’s journalism”, recalls the press release according to which this indictment “constitutes an extremely worrying signal for all journalists, in particular, and for democracy, in general, of which freedom to inform is an essential pillar “.
