Amsterdam. Dutch Minister of Justice Dilan Yeşilgöz became the new leader of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s conservative People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). In the general elections to be held in the Netherlands in November, Yeşilgöz will lead the party as the first female politician to head the VVD. If 46-year-old Yeşilgöz is successful in the elections, she will be the first female prime minister of the Netherlands.
Yeşilgöz, of Kurdish origin, immigrated from Turkey to the Netherlands when he was 8 years old. Rutte, the longest-serving Dutch Prime Minister, announced last month that he would leave politics after his government collapsed due to the asylum policy. Rutte will continue his duty until a new cabinet is formed.
The Dutch will go to the polls on November 22. This will be the first election without Rutte as head of the VVD since 2006.
