The total number of people believed to have died in the wildfire that devastated part of Hawaii last month was reduced this Friday (15) from 115 to 97, following a review by authorities.

“The Department of Defense and all of its physical anthropologists were able to help us better discern who was in the vehicles or in the houses,” explained the governor of the American state, Josh Green, in a video posted on Facebook.

Green did not give details about the origin of the disparity, but continuous revisions of figures are usually made after catastrophes occur. The scattering of human remains was a notable problem in Lahaina, where some victims are believed to have fled with other people or pets.

The governor added that there are now 31 citizens whose whereabouts have not been confirmed.
