The XIX Olympic Games held in Mexico, from October 12 to 27, 1968, were the first to be hosted by a “developing” country. A long struggle preceded the granting of the Olympics to Mexico. On October 12, 1968, more than 5,500 athletes from 112 countries participated in the opening of the event. In addition to the Olympic enthusiasm, a climate of repression and revolt reigned in the country. Ten days before the opening of the Games, the Mexican government had recruited military personnel to brutally repress student protests.
