Drink until the doctor comes: A good three and a half hours after the piercing, the helpers at the Oktoberfest medical station treated the first “alcohol-related total failure”. A young man from the USA could no longer walk – paramedics brought him on a stretcher at 3:38 p.m. Compared to previous years, this was extremely late, explained the Aicher Ambulance. Last year, the first “beer victim” – then a young woman – was admitted completely drunk at 2:07 p.m. Sometimes the first ones even arrived before 12 p.m. and thus before the official start of beer serving.

By Saturday afternoon, the medical station had to care for around 200 patients. “Fortunately, they still only suffer from minor injuries or circulatory problems, which is not surprising given the extremely warm weather,” said Michel Belcijan, operations manager of the Aicher Ambulance. “The Oktoberfest guests seem to be enjoying the fantastic weather and celebrating in a very disciplined manner this year, which of course makes us happy.”

The festival site had only been open for a few minutes when the first patient arrived: At 9:09 a.m., a young man had to be treated who had fallen while sprinting towards the festival tent and sustained abrasions.

Around 450 paramedics and 55 doctors are on duty on the 18 days of the festival from Saturday onwards. This year there is once again a mobile CT device in the outpatient clinic. This is intended to rule out dangerous cerebral hemorrhages in the event of head injuries. This relieves the burden on the emergency departments of Munich hospitals: Until now, all of these patients had to go to the hospital as a precaution.
