Police officers from the economic crime repression brigade took Brigitte Marsigny (Les Républicains), mayor of the town of Noisy-le-Grand (Seine-Saint-Denis), into custody on Tuesday September 12. His home and office were also searched. These operations are part of a judicial investigation into money laundering and illegal taking of interests, as confirmed in Monde the Paris public prosecutor’s office, which inherited this procedure initially opened in Bobigny in 2019.

The investigation concerns suspicions concerning “the regularity of transfer of land belonging to the municipality and the granting of building permits”, specifies the prosecution. Another aspect of the file concerns the declaration of assets of Ms. Marsigny, following a report of possible omissions by the High Authority for the transparency of public life.

Opposition criticism

Brigitte Marsigny was released at the end of her police custody without being prosecuted at this stage. When asked, she did not react to questions about the existence of the judicial investigation. Mayor of Noisy-le-Grand since 2015, Ms. Marsigny, aged 71, is a candidate in the senatorial elections on September 24, in fourth place on the Republican list. A lawyer by profession, she began her career in 1974 and twice held the position of president of Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis). She also served on the bar council and the National Bar Council, before entering politics.

In recent years, as mayor, she has been the subject of criticism from members of the municipal opposition aimed at “somewhat unfortunate confusion of genres” after the appointment of an assistant to town planning elsewhere “property manager, and former employee of a large developer”reported The Parisian in 2017. In January, the councilor sparked controversy by submitting to the municipal council a deliberation aimed at canceling a debt of 700,000 euros, more than a third owed by the former mayor Françoise Richard (1984-1993) – even though Brigitte Marsigny was Ms. Richard’s lawyer.
