New York Mayor Eric Adams tonight (Monday) unveiled new details about the deadly fire that was recorded last night in the Bronx borough, in which 17 people were killed and 62 others were injured. He said an initial investigation revealed that the fire was recorded following a malfunction in a heater that operated on the second floor of the building.

“The fire broke out in a bedroom recorded in one of the apartments. Firefighters found physical evidence of this, and police investigators heard testimony from the occupants of the building that came out,” said New York fire crew chief Daniel Negro. He said the smoke from the fire spread throughout the 19-story building because the main door of the apartment was open – allowing smoke to reach the stairwell and from there into other apartments in the building.

“The amount of smoke that has spread in the building is unprecedented, and this has led to the high number of deaths and casualties recorded in this disaster,” Negro noted. “Some of the occupants could not get out of their house, others tried to escape and were injured on the way because of the amount of smoke.” Adams noted that the doors in the building were supposed to close automatically, and apparently a malfunction led to the door being open in the apartment where the fire broke out.
