An inmate of the Val-de-Reuil penitentiary center, in Eure, was indicted on Sunday for attempted murder after the attack on a guard, announced Sunday evening the public prosecutor of Évreux, Rémi Coutin.

“The accused was indicted this afternoon (Sunday, Editor’s note), on the charge of attempted murder of a person holding public authority, and placed in pre-trial detention at the Rouen remand center,” the magistrate said. The detainee was taken into custody on Saturday.

Attempted strangulation and homemade knife

The events occurred on Friday when the 26-year-old inmate, “followed for radicalization”, called a supervisor for a landline problem, Mr. Coutin said on Saturday. While the guard “checked the phone, the inmate (…) attempted to strangle him and strike him several times with what appears at this stage to be a homemade knife,” the magistrate detailed. “The supervisor managed to ward off the blows and triggered his alarm. Other guards intervened and managed to control the attacker,” he continued.

Arriving in Val-de-Reuil in January, the inmate “is serving a 15-year prison sentence for aggravated rape handed down by the Val-de-Marne Assize Court in 2017,” according to the prosecutor. On September 12, the inmate “also received a sentence of 18 months for violence against guards committed in a penitentiary establishment in the North,” added Rémi Coutin, specifying that “the investigation was entrusted to the judicial police of Rouen”.

The magistrate did not provide details on the state of health of the supervisor.
