Saint Joseph of Cupertino, then, sought refuge in the home of a rich relative who would also end up throwing him out on the street, frustrated by his continuous mistakes. José, after this, more than confirmed the rumors that pointed him out as “a good-for-nothing.” Then, his mother begged a relative of hers, a Franciscan friar, to receive the boy as messenger of his convent.
This time, Joseph was accepted as a worker: they put him to work in the stable and, to the surprise of many, he did not do so badly. The boy began to perform better, even showing skill for the job.
For his displays of humility, kindness, spirit of penitence and prayer, Joseph gradually gained the appreciation of the religious, who in 1625 – the saint was about 22 years old – admitted him by unanimous vote.
